In the Persian Empire, Kashan was considered one of the most important trading places on the famous Silk Road. The city was home to several royal rug workshops, which produced some of the most beautiful and expensive rugs in the world. Kashan carpets are mostly knotted from very good wool, and more rarely silk. The pattern is usually a medallion as well as floral ornaments or allover designs can be found.
