Description

This handwoven Afghan Sumak rug boasts a flat-weave construction that showcases the intricate skill of its artisan creators, reflecting a time-honored tradition from the heart of Afghanistan's rich textile history. The rug's surface presents a tableau of geometric motifs and intricate borders in a harmony of earthy reds, deep blues, and touches of ivory that lend themselves effortlessly to a range of contemporary interior designs. Unique among its peers for the distinctive weaving technique, this piece seamlessly melds cultural heritage with modern-day aesthetics. Measuring 4'2" x 6'4", it offers an inviting blend of comfort and artful design to any living space.

Sumak rugs are named for the village of Shamakhi in the Caucasus, where the technique was widely practiced, but it was not invented there. Sumak has been practiced extensively across the world, from Central Asia to Iran. Today Sumak rugs are primarily woven in the large weaving districts in India. The construction of Sumaks is different from that of the hand knotted rugs. The techniques used to make these rugs can produce a primarily flat weave rug that can be thick and reversible, or single sided with fine elements that can contain silk.

Our collection includes new and vintage/antique handmade rugs, each with its own unique characteristics and color variations, enhancing their individuality and charm. We do our best to accurately depict colors and areas of variation/repair/wear in our photos. We invite you to embrace the inherent beauty of these variations, as they contribute to the authenticity and allure of our handcrafted rugs. Expert repairs and restoration available as needed.
